Convenient, but pricy long term

I tried Butternut Box for my senior golden retriever, opting for the fresh lamb. The convenience of having it delivered was great, and setting up the personalized plan was simple. My dog really enjoyed the food, and I noticed his coat looked a bit shinier after a few weeks. The food quality is clearly good, and I appreciate that it's tailored to his needs. My only real gripe is the regular price. While the initial discount was excellent, the ongoing subscription cost is quite a bit higher than his previous food, even with the benefits. It's a trade-off between quality/convenience and budget, which is something to consider for sure. Packaging was recyclable, which is a plus.

Good value for initial box

I was looking to switch my dog to a fresh food diet but worried about the cost. Found Butternut Box and got a great deal on my first order. The personalized plan for my beagle seemed thorough. It definitely felt worth it for the price I paid.

Decent food, some delivery hiccups

I ordered the fresh chicken dog food for my terrier mix. The initial sign-up process was straightforward, setting up his profile was easy enough. The first delivery came quickly, about 4 days after I ordered, and the packaging was good, everything stayed frozen. My dog took to the food right away, no stomach issues transitioning him. However, the second box took 6 days to reach me in Arizona, and one of the cooler packs had defrosted a bit, though the food was still cold. The quality of the food itself seems high, looks and smells fresh. Customer support was responsive when I asked about the delayed delivery, which was good.

I saw a 75% off first box ad somewhere, but now I can't find it. Are those deals still around or was that a Black Friday thing?

B Ben 1 month ago
I got 75% off my first box last December, so they definitely do those bigger promotions sometimes. Keep an eye out around holidays like January or Black Friday, that's when they seem to pop up more often.

They usually have 50% off for new customers always. The 75% off is rarer, but I've seen it. Try searching for new customer offers.

My dog has a really sensitive stomach, we've tried a few different brands. How good is Butternut Box for dogs with allergies or tummy issues?

B Ben 1 month ago
My golden doodle used to have constant upset tummies, and switching to Butternut Box (the lamb recipe specifically) made a huge difference. It's grain-free and they claim it's hypoallergenic, which seems true for us.

They do personalized plans, so when you sign up, you can list all your dog's sensitivities. My vet actually recommended them for my dog's IBS, and it's been great. Less scratching and no more dodgy poos.

Does anyone know if they deliver to Miami, FL? I'm worried about the fresh food in the heat.

A Alex 1 month ago
I'm in Orlando and get it fine. It comes in insulated packaging with ice packs, so it should be okay for a bit. You might want to try to be home for delivery though, just in case.

They deliver nationwide, so Miami should be fine. I'm in Arizona and it holds up in transit. Just gotta get it in the fridge/freezer quick!

i just signed up, but forgot to add a referral code from my friend. can i still add it after the fact, or am i out of luck for the discount?

D Derek 1 month ago
Usually, those codes are for new customers at the very start of the signup process. I think you might be out of luck for your first box, but maybe contact their support? Or you can always refer someone else later and get credit that way.

Afaik, codes have to be applied when you first set up the account. It's kinda annoying, but that's how most of these subscription services work.

Hey everyone, thinking about trying Butternut Box for my lab. She's kinda picky. How easy is it to swap flavors if she doesn't like one?

M Mark 2 months ago
Super easy! I had to change from chicken to lamb after my beagle turned her nose up. Just go into your account settings and you can adjust the meal plan pretty quickly. They even have a plant-based option now.

Yeah, I think you can adjust it whenever. My friend had to do it for her pug, he's a diva. She said it was straightforward online.

How long does it typically take for the first box to arrive after signing up? Need to make sure I have enough of her old food.

B Beth Ito 1 month ago
I think mine arrived within 3-5 business days after I signed up. They give you a delivery date when you confirm your order, so you'll know exactly when to expect it. Plenty of time to finish up old food.

My first delivery was pretty quick, about 4 days. You can also pick specific delivery days later on, which is handy.

How much freezer space does this stuff actually take up? I have a small freezer.

R Rachel 2 months ago
It's a fair bit, honestly. The packs are flat-ish but they add up. For a medium dog, I usually fill about one shelf in my standard freezer. If you have a tiny one, you might need to make some space or get smaller deliveries more often if that's an option.

A Andre G. 2 months ago
Yeah, it needs more than you'd think. Think about how many frozen pizzas you can fit, probably about the same volume for a week's worth for a medium dog.

Is Butternut Box really worth the price compared to, say, The Farmer's Dog? It seems a bit more expensive.

C Cody Whitfield 2 months ago
I tried both. For me, Butternut Box felt a bit more tailored and my dog seemed to enjoy the variety more. The Farmer's Dog was good too, but I felt like I was getting more bang for my buck with Butternut for the quality and personalization. Plus, I like their extra treats.
